Fly to Colombia for ~$500 Return

A great deal to Colombia today from American Airlines (and partner Westjet from connecting cities). Prices to Barranquilla, Colombia’s Caribbean coastal capital are currently under $500 CAD from some markets. Eligible dates appear to start now with limited availability through to December. This is not likely to last very long.

EDIT – May 28th: The number of dates that work at these prices decreased overnight, act quickly to see what’s left.
EDIT – June 3rd: These prices disappeared after a day or so last week, but at least for the moment — they’re back, and a few are even lower! Act fast.

Save Big on Flights to the USA

With the Canadian dollar valued around 80¢ USD for much of this year, flights to the USA have seen some discounts over the last few months. Now a large number of routes are being discounted even further, and with the dollar creeping back up closer to 84¢, there are some great deals to be found. Not limited regionally or even by carrier — Delta, Air Canada, Westjet, Porter, US Airways, United and others are all offering excellent rates from cities across the country to destinations all over the US, some more than 50% off.

Find just a few examples listed below, there are a lot of options currently available from some of the bigger airports so be sure to check both Google Flight Explorer and Skyscanner (USA results linked from each city’s name). All return prices listed here are live as of May 13th, and are in USD:

Google Flight Explorer … Gone? Coming Back?

Update — February 2, 2015 — Google Flight Explorer appears to have been removed from search results.

One of the best tools for consistently discovering great flight deals has been Google Flight Explorer. After Google moved to acquire ITA in 2010, Google Flights debuted in 2011 and Flight Explorer rolled out in December of 2012. A Google spokesperson told The Next Web it was an experiment.

Flight Explorer is a an experimental feature of Flight Search that allow users to explore flight destinations.  The feature enables users to consider multiple destinations and multiple days at once, all using live prices, quickly.

The ability to search whole countries and entire regions rather than specific cities or airports really set this tool apart. For travellers on a budget, not having to select fixed dates or even a destination offered maximum flexibility when hunting for great deals.

Launched with no fanfare, Flight Explorer never received much promotion at all in the last year and half. On Wednesday the data vanished from searches and then the page itself was forwarded to Google’s regular Flights search page (using a 302 temporary redirect). With no official announcement, the sudden disappearance lead users on a number of travel and airfare forums to speculate if it may have been shelved.

 

Google Flight Explorer to Return?

This brief exchange on Twitter the day after it was pulled is promising:

David Robles Fosg is Business Development Principal at Google Travel and Noam Ben Haim is Senior Product Manager for Travel, Google Flight Search.

While there’s no indication of when it might return, it does seem that the removal may be temporary or perhaps that functionality will return as part of an expanded re-launch. Hopefully it comes back soon, I’m certainly looking forward to what else they might be working on.

The excellent fare-finding tool vanished from search results recently, making it difficult to find for those who didn’t know the URL, and leading some to wonder if the experimental extension of Google Flights had been discontinued. Google has elected to remove it from their own search results (by adding a noindex tag to the page), but at least for now it’s still available here:

There hasn’t been any official post outlining the reason for the removal, perhaps there’s an update in the works, or it could also be that a page popular with people on the go isn’t particularly mobile-friendly in its current form.
